1. Introduction

1.1 What is Concrete?
Concrete is a composite material composed of water, coarse
granular material (the fine and coarse aggregate or filler) embedded
in a hard matrix of material (the cement or binder) that fills the
space among the aggregate particles and glues them together.

1.2What is Green Concrete?
Green concrete is defined as a concrete which uses waste materials
as at least one of its components; or its production process does not
lead to environmental destruction (or significantly lesser). Green
concrete improves the 3 main pillars of sustainability:
environmental, economic, and social impacts. Using renewable
rather than non-renewable resources, these materials are referred to
as green materials and are environmentally friendly. In Vietnam,
there is an abundance of agricultural waste (eg. Coconut shells, coir,
rice husk), which have limited to no use. By harnessing such
materials, we can reduce environmental pollution, have substantial
cost saving as well have having less waste to be removed.

1.3Why do we study it?
This study uses waste materials found in abundance in Vietnam
(coconut shell and rice husk) as replacements for gravel and sand in
concrete block manufacturing. Green lightweight concrete is a
prevailing building material which is being used in basic
construction in many advanced countries and regions worldwide.
Lightweight aggregates yields better hardened properties than
normal-weight concrete, indicating that green building materials can
be successfully applied in lightweight aggregate concrete, enabling

a significant increase in the use of green building materials.
Improved utilization of waste resources will result in less pollution,
improved economic stability and a greener environment.
1.4Fly ash
Fly ash (also known as flue-ash) is one of the residues generated in
combustion of coal. The components of fly ash vary considerably,
but all fly ash includes substantial amounts of silicon dioxide (SiO2)
and calcium oxide (CaO). Fly ash is generally captured by
electrostatic precipitators, and collected for various use. One major
