Russia possesses many achievements, which are recorded in the
Guinness Book of Records. Most Russians, let alone foreigners, don't have
the slightest idea about many of them.
Unfortunately, not all of the records make Russia proud; some of the facts
bring us to a sad mood and make us give a serious thought to them. So
Moscow, the capital of Russia, is famous for the tallest university building
in the world. The matter in question is the skyscraper of Moscow State
and forty thousand rooms.
Moscow also has the biggest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world - The
Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
The most valuable fish was also caught in Russia. More than eighty years
ago in the Tihaya Sosna River, local fishermen caught a sturgeon,
weighing as much as 1,227 kg. It had 245 kg. of first-rate caviar, and now,
these fishermen could sell it for around $289,000.
The deepest lake in the world is Lake Baikal (5,390 ft.), and the biggest
forest is the Siberian Taiga.
But, there are also some records that no one wants to remember.
Not far from Moscow there is a city called Dzerzhinsk, which is considered
to be the dirtiest city in the world. According to the Guinness Book of
Records, the population of this city is more than three hundred thousand
people, and the average life expectancy in the town is forty-eight years.
The Oymyakon village in Yakutia (Sakha Republic) is famous for being the
coldest inhabited locality in the world. The average temperature in the
village in January is minus 50 degrees Celsius (-58 degree Fahrenheit).
